CAVING

Introduction

Caves are a very common around where I grew up. One of the tourist attractions in my hometown was Tuckaleechee Caverns, and I worked there during summers and weekends for five years to fund my way through college. My geoscience career started from my interest in learning more about the cave and seismic system installed in it. However, it wasn't until graduate school in Arizona that I went on my first wild caving trip. When I moved to Texas, I joined the Greater Houston Grotto. They started me out in Whirlpool Caverns, a small opening underneath an overpass in Austin. It was a grueling experience of nonstop crawling, and I almost wrote the hobby off. They later took me to some larger caves at the Deep and Punkin Nature Reserve, which were much more enjoyable. I tend to enjoy vertical caving, borehole passages, and cool minerals. I avoid long crawls, sketchy climbs, and water passages. Check out my pictures and videos below.
